The amount of dental disease we see in general practice is, quite honestly, alarming. Hardly a day goes by without a patient who needs treatment or advice for dental problems, and the vast majority of these cases are the direct result of an inappropriate diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A healthy mouth is not a cosmetic detail. Chronic dental infection forces the body to fight bacteria every single hour of every day, which weakens the immune system and greatly increases the risk of chronic disease. That&#8217;s why I want to share these guidelines, so you can start feeding raw bones to your dog with confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Always raw, never cooked<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cooked bones become brittle and splinter easily, which can cause serious intestinal injury. Raw bones, by contrast, act as the toothbrush nature designed for your dog \u2014 but only if they are gnawed for 10 minutes or more per session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How often?<\/strong> Two to three times a week is plenty. Feeding bones every day, or too much bone in a single session, can lead to constipation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A practical tip:<\/strong> never offer a bone to a very hungry dog. They will not chew it properly and may swallow large chunks, risking obstruction. I prefer to give my dogs their bones about 10 minutes after a slightly reduced main meal (I don&#8217;t want them gaining weight).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Which bone should you choose?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Size and type matter.<\/strong> Weight-bearing leg bones from large animals (beef, pork) are very dense and can fracture the teeth of inexperienced chewers, or dogs with very powerful jaws such as bull terrier breeds. Lamb or venison leg bones are usually a better option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For my cocker spaniels I use beef rib bones, which they cannot splinter and cannot swallow whole, and which keep them happily gnawing for a good 15 minutes. They also get lamb rib flaps containing two ribs. They are experienced raw bone eaters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Know your dog.<\/strong> Brachycephalic breeds (pug, bulldog) and miniature breeds (chihuahua) do not have the dentition or throat to handle firm bones. For them, softer options are far more appropriate: chicken wings, chicken necks, duck necks. Labradors, who tend to bolt their food, must always be given a bone they cannot swallow whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Feeding protocol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A raw bone is a highly prized resource. Within a pack, even the lowest-ranking dog will defend its food from the others. This is completely normal behaviour and should be respected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My recommendations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Offer bones outdoors or in a calm space where the dog won&#8217;t be disturbed.<\/li><li>Separate dogs from each other and keep young children away during this time.<\/li><li>Do not interrupt or challenge your dog while they are eating.<\/li><li>Once they walk away from what&#8217;s left, simply remove it quietly.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is your dog new to raw bones?<\/strong> Supervise them. With time you will learn which type and size suits them best, and they will become more experienced and able to handle larger bones safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Basic hygiene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with any raw meat product, a few simple precautions go a long way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wash your hands and any contaminated surfaces immediately afterwards.<\/li><li>Store raw meat in a sealed container, separate from other food in the fridge.<\/li><li>I personally pour boiling water over the bones and let them sit for a couple of minutes before serving.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. The health benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a dog eats raw bones regularly and appropriately, the benefits are remarkable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Dramatically improved oral health.<\/li><li>Stronger head and neck musculature.<\/li><li>A happier mental disposition \u2014 gnawing is a deeply satisfying activity for a dog.<\/li><li>A balanced oral microbiome that supports general health.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26a0\ufe0f Beware of &#8220;natural&#8221; treats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Products such as rawhide, pig ears and rabbit ears are very often imported, highly processed, and contain additives or chemicals that may harm the gut. And remember: &#8220;natural&#8221; does not mean &#8220;safe&#8221; \u2014 after all, arsenic is natural too! Safer options are locally produced, air-dried, single-ingredient chews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I truly hope this guide gives you the confidence to start your dog on raw bones.
